Lady In The Water

I think this movie was a great concept. Great idea. Mankind does seem to have gotten progressively worse throughout the years (i.e. more war, more conflict, not less). Is it because we stopped listening to the narfs that live in the blue world? I’m not sure. But what I see in this tale (as it’s described at the start of the movie) is basically that at one point people were more in touch with a feminine deity and had balance - and as time passed we collectively neglected the feminine aspect and became more angry, aggro, however you want to describe it
This is something that some people believe they have fact for (look up info about the history of goddess based religions, you’ll see what I mean), it’s more of an idea to me - something that I could make a case for that it seems to me this movie is attempting to portray. However - it’s done in a very cheesy hollywood style. Read on - if you want to hear more babble/rant/review
While watching this movie I got the feeling that M. Night Shymalan had a vision of himself writing something that would change the world and cause people to stop being so mean to one another. Why you ask? Because his character in the movie (yeah, he’s in it) is a writer who discovers that something he writes is going to CHANGE THE WORLD! Yeah. So anyway, that part is great. And the “man negelected the water, the blue world, the women (aka narfs aka nymphs aka….) that used to help us out” idea is great! BUT…
M. Night Shymalan goes about telling this story with a cheesy stereotype “modern asian alternative girl” (complete with sexy body, colored hair and funny accent) and her stereotype “old asian woman” mother. There is a “weird guy” who only works out one half of his body, and some “slackers” too. You also get a movie critic who’s place in the movie is basically to represent movie critics who M. Night Shymalan must not like. I don’t like them either, but I’m not sure being so cheesy as to put one in the movie just to make a statement actually added anything to this movie (or at least anything that I liked). I guess I could have done without the movie critic - but this is my problem: I could have done without most of the movie.
The bottom line is that it’s done in such a cheesy fashion that it makes the story less interesting. I really think that Shymalan was trying to sneak in his anti-war sentiments by way of bad hollywood jokes. Or more than that, he was trying to get across that he feels that man has moved far from balance, and that if we would all open up and have a little awakening and find a way to be in touch with a softer, calmer, “blue world” sort of life - things would be better. Which, again, I think is great. I just wish it was taken more seriously though. Eh.
